The quickest football boots in the world were paired with the best player in the world by Nike long before Cristiano started playing with Flywire and carbon fibre sole plates! When it comes to Nike's Mercurial line, Brazilian sensation Ronaldo dominated for over ten years, and the boots made for the speedster influenced the development of the modern football boot industry.
During his peak, 'El Fenúmeno' possessed incredible speed and agility, and his achievements inspired Nike to develop their own line of R9 football footwear. The R9 emblem on the tongue serves as a symbol for the innovative technology and vibrant colorways of Ronaldo's boots, which set the standard for fast footwear.
When the Nike Mercurial Vapor III football boots first hit the field in 2006, stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry used them primarily, breaking records for close ball control, pace, and goal scoring.
The first Nike boot to use the ground-breaking new Teijin synthetic upper—which adapted and moulded to the wearer's foot for a "second skin" fit—was the Nike Mercurial Vapor III. In addition, the Vapor III brought carbon fibre into the Vapor lineup with a lightweight heel wrap designed to disperse impact during heel striking.

Samba Yellow 2006
This collection also designed for R9, who wore the first limited edition we are featuring during the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The colours of Samba Yellow and Green were a tribute to the Brazilians, and they blend well with what was the team of the "Joga Bonito".
10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF NIKE MERCURIAL
Next up we look at the boot created to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the original Nike Mercurial and what was the last ever R9 production boot.
The boot of the time was the Nike Mercurial Vapor MV III, and Nike produced a limited run of 1000 boots in the original Black / Pearl / Comet Red colourway from R9’s original boots.
This colorway deviated away from the usual Vapor III’s and had a more leather like finish to the upper incorporating the infamous R9 larger side swooshes. The boots were accompanied with a book called ‘10 Years of Goals’ which was printed in English and Italian.
CACTUS GREEN
CR7 had a breakthrough season in 2006–2007, scoring more than 20 goals and winning his first Premier League title with Manchester United while donning the Mercurial Vapor MV III boots. In 2007 he wore the Nike Mercurial Vapor III Cactus and variations of this bright colour went on to create some of the most popular Nike Vapor boots since.
The Mercurial Vapour III had arrived by the time Zlatan relocated to Inter Milan in 2006, across Italy. Zlatan created a name for himself in his first league winning season at Inter wearing multiple Vapour III colorways, also including the vivid Cactus drop. He wore three generations of jerseys while at Inter, scoring 55 goals in 88 games.
GOLD ITALY
Lastly these highly sought after Italy Gold/Blue Nike Vapor III boots were produced in honour of Italy's 2006 World Cup victory. There were just 250 pairs made, therefore they were very rare and a real collectors favourite – good luck in finding a pair today!
This very limited edited featured an Italian flag on the tongue, 4 stars (for previous Italian World Cups championships) and other little details such as the insoles.
